Gynecomastia is the development of breast tissue in males. The tissue is located beneath and around the nipples. The area may be tender. Gynecomastia usually occurs during adolescence and in older men.
Gynecomastia is common in adolescents and will usually go away by itself. Gynecomastia in boys is caused by the onset of puberty when the levels of testosterone and estrogen begin to fluctuate in the body. The condition usually does not require treatment and will often go away with time.
Gynecomastia is common in older men due to decreased levels of testosterone. The condition may also be caused by certain medications, diseases, and tumors. Illegal drugs and steroid use may also cause the condition to occur.
If you suspect that you may have Gynecomastia please see a medical doctor. There is treatment available and although the condition itself is not usually serious, you must see a doctor in order to be certain that it is not caused by an underlying medical condition.
